Jesse Brown, a Marine Corps veteran and executive director at the DAV National Service & Legislative Headquarters, is named secretary of veterans affairs under President Bill Clinton. Brown joined DAV in 1967, eventually becoming its first African American executive director in 1988. He will serve a VA secretary until 1997.
The reasons are as individual as our members. Some join for the fellowship at our more than 1,200 local chapters. Some for the inspiring national events. Others for opportunities to serve their fellow veterans and their families. And many join to continue the fight to support the rights and benefits of all veterans. Among VSOs and advocates, there's broad agreement: Combat-disabled veterans deserve ALL of their earned benefits, survivors deserve stronger support, family caregivers need meaningful assistance, and veteran suicide demands action. The only obstacle is the benefit cuts. Remove Section 108 from the Take Care of America's Veterans Act. Our nation doesn’t need to take benefits from one generation of veterans to keep our promises to another.

When wildfires swept through Southern California in early 2025, they left a trail of devastation. Among those affected were countless veterans and their families, many of whom suddenly found themselves displaced and in urgent need of support.
DAV sprang into action. The DAV Disaster Relief Program includes delivering emergency grants and supply kits to veterans and their families to help them weather those critical first days away from home.
