Jill Remick, DAV’s 2024 Philanthropist of the Year and a retired emergency room nurse, has long been passionate about supporting disabled veterans. As a nurse, she frequently encountered veterans in need, which resulted in her developing a deep commitment to their care and well-being.
“I want to do so much more while I still have the health and physical ability to do it,” she said. “I think veterans don’t get the credit they deserve, and I’m just driven to ensure they get help.”
Remick shared that when she first started giving to DAV over 40 years ago, it was just dollars at a time. However, over the years, as her giving has increased, she has become more involved with DAV.
One of her most fulfilling experiences has been volunteering at the DAV 5K events. The 5K is extra special to Remick because of the relationship she has built with service-disabled Air Force veteran and DAV Past National Commander Dick Marbes, a veteran who lost his leg in military service. Marbes’ courage and motivation during the 5K have served as powerful reminders to Remick of why she supports DAV and the importance of aiding those who have made significant sacrifices.
“He is a tremendous inspiration to me,” she said. “He reminds me of why I give back. I want veterans to have the mental and physical health care they need.”
This giving season, consider joining Remick in her mission of supporting our nation’s heroes by taking advantage of one of DAV’s giving options, such as donating stock, cash, charitable gift annuities or other assets.
