DAV Chapter #64 Elizabeth City, NC, recently hosted a Christmas outreach program in their community. During their December monthly chapter meeting, members packed 102 gift bags for local assisted living, senior and rehab centers. The chapter raised more than $2,500 through its members and local businesses to help pay for the gifts. After completing all of their local drop-offs, chapter members brought the remaining 19 bags to the VA hospital in Hampton, Virginia, for veterans there.
Has your chapter done something positive for your local community? We’d love to hear about it! Please send photos and info about your outreach to [email protected].

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently proposed a change to how it evaluates painful scars for disability compensation. Under the proposed rule, the VA would amend the rating schedule to require objective evidence of pain before a scar can be rated as painful. This means that a veteran’s statement would not be enough on its own—the pain would need to be confirmed during an exam or through an observable sign such as tenderness when the scar is touched.
