The Military Assistance Advisory Group-Vietnam is designated, beginning a politically and socially fraught war that won’t officially end until 1975. Of the 2.7 million who will serve in country, 58,220 Americans will be killed and 304,000 wounded—though the full cost of the war on Vietnam veterans is ongoing. A total of 9 million Americans will serve on active duty during the Vietnam era.
The reasons are as individual as our members. Some join for the fellowship at our more than 1,200 local chapters. Some for the inspiring national events. Others for opportunities to serve their fellow veterans and their families. And many join to continue the fight to support the rights and benefits of all veterans. DAV Chapter 18 in Paintsville, Kentucky, demonstrated the impact of grassroots leadership by organizing its annual veteran suicide awareness march through their city. Now in its eighth year, the event brought DAV members, veterans and community supporters together to promote the message, "Honor. Support. Prevent."

The results are clear. Veterans overwhelmingly oppose benefits cuts as budget or PAYGO offsets. Congress can keep the promise to today’s and tomorrow’s veterans. They need to remove Section 108 and then pass the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act.
