VA News: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced in August that eligible veterans can now submit and track mileage-only travel claims directly from a smartphone or mobile device through the VA: Health and Benefits mobile app. This new feature streamlines the reimbursement process, potentially reducing the number of paper claims and the time it takes to process them.

The app automatically identifies when a veteran’s VA appointment may be eligible for mileage reimbursement and displays a prompt on the home screen, allowing for quick submission with just a few clicks.

To be eligible for this and other health care travel reimbursements, veterans must meet certain criteria, such as traveling for treatment of a service-connected condition; receiving a VA pension; having an income below the maximum annual VA pension rate; being unable to afford travel; or traveling to attend a scheduled VA claim exam, get a service dog or receive VA-approved transplant care.

DAV National Service Director Scott Hope recently participated in a roundtable discussion entitled Frontline of Fraud: Preventing Scams Against Servicemembers, Veterans and Their Families. During the roundtable, which was hosted by members of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, they discussed fraud schemes targeting veterans and their families and fraudulent benefit schemes like those carried out by claim sharks.
