The Department of Veterans Affairs is expanding access to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-authorized virtual reality (VR) therapy designed to treat chronic pain. The program offers a nondrug alternative for veterans, a community that experiences higher rates of persistent pain than the general population.
The program uses an eight-week curriculum that combines cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness and pain education. Veterans use a VR headset in their homes to engage with immersive environments that teach coping skills and breathing techniques. This approach aims to reduce reliance on opioids and invasive procedures by addressing both the psychological and physical aspects of pain.
The technology is now available under the VA’s Federal Supply Schedule, allowing any VA provider to prescribe the treatment to eligible patients. Veterans using the program report significant improvements in pain levels, sleep quality and overall mental health.
