In a prestigious ceremony at the White House this afternoon, President Joe Biden will award Kenneth J. David, adjutant of DAV Chapter 11 in Girard, Ohio, the Medal of Honor—upgrading his previous Distinguished Service Cross to the nation’s highest military decoration. Tune in to the live White House stream at 5:00 pm EST today to watch the medal ceremony.

Kenneth David

David, a decorated Army veteran whose actions during the Vietnam War have long been celebrated as extraordinary, will be recognized for his selflessness and courage under fire. The ceremony marks the culmination of decades of advocacy to ensure his heroism received its due recognition.

The citation for his Medal of Honor recounts his valor during a perilous engagement, where he repeatedly risked his life to save fellow soldiers under heavy enemy fire, ultimately securing their survival.

“It’s an overwhelming and humbling honor,” David said. “This medal represents not just my actions, but the bravery and sacrifice of everyone who served beside me.”

Fred McGee

At the same ceremony, the late Fred B. McGee, an Army veteran of the Korean War and DAV member from Smithfield, Ohio, will posthumously be awarded the Medal of Honor.

McGee, who passed away in 2020, was recognized with the Silver Star for his extraordinary bravery under fire. Wounded and facing an overwhelming enemy force, Cpl. McGee stayed behind to defend his fellow soldiers after the order to withdraw had been issued. His family accepted the award on his behalf, ensuring his legacy endures as a symbol of sacrifice and heroism.

“This is a monumental moment not just for Kenny and the McGee family, but for all veterans,” said DAV National Adjutant Barry Jesinoski. “Their stories remind us of the extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by those who have served our nation.”

The dual honors highlight the continued efforts to ensure all veterans receive the recognition they deserve. Both David and McGee’s stories serve as powerful reminders of the enduring sacrifices made in service to the United States.
