Initiative recognizes sacrifices, contributions while encouraging participation

Bobby Body is selected as the first #MemberMonday nominee. Bobby lost his leg as a result of combat injuries and is now an Apprentice National Service Officer with DAV and a champion power lifter.

Thousands of DAV members from across the nation quietly sacrifice their time, effort and expertise to causes and events that benefit the veteran community. While many of them are recognized at their local chapters or in their local communities, few are recognized nationally or get the full measure of attention they deserve.

Further still, many of our members are doing great things outside of the veteran community. They are police officers, fire fighters, members of Congress, teachers, doctors, mothers and fathers, and play countless other critical roles in their hometowns.

#MemberMonday is an opportunity to nationally recognize the unsung heroes in the veteran community. The goal is to bring attention to the work DAV members do on behalf of veterans and their communities while encouraging DAV’s social networking audiences to share their stories in ways that encourage membership, volunteerism and awareness of the issues we face.

Our first #MemberMonday honorees are featured in DAV public service announcements, but in the future #MemberMonday nominees will come from chapters and departments across the country. They will be highlighted across DAV’s social media platforms to include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn reaching an audience of more than 1.6 million people.

Christy Gardner is our second #MemberMonday nominee. Christy suffered a head injury while serving in Korea. Her service dog, Moxie [pictured], is trained to detect seizures and help Christy with certain tasks.
We’ll be spotlighting the members who are in the trenches supporting DAV’s mission in the field.

“We’re really excited about #MemberMonday and can’t wait to shine the spot light on our members who do so much for the veteran community,” said Doug Wells, National Membership Director for DAV.

Many of you are probably wondering already, how do you submit a member for #MemberMonday? It’s really easy!

Email [email protected] with a short biography (at least 4-5 sentences, but as much as you’d like), and two high-quality photos of the member with at least one of the photos displaying their DAV chapter or department.

Photo quality is important. They do not need to be professional shots, but images should have good lighting, prominently focus on the veteran being submitted and be high-resolution.

High-resolution simply means it was taken with a good digital camera or newer smart phone and has not been compressed. If you’re downloading from a site like Facebook, you’ll want to pay close attention to the resolution, because the photo is likely compressed.

The subject line of your email should say #MemberMonday and please let us know if there is a special week that would work best to highlight your nominee.
