The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Research and Development has released new findings in the areas of chronic pain, toxic exposure and long-term medication risks.

Here’s the breakdown of the latest research:

A better way to manage pain: A study of 800 veterans found that the Whole Health approach is more effective than standard care or traditional talk therapy in reducing how much chronic pain interferes with daily life. These results were equally effective when delivered through telehealth.

The impact of toxic exposure: Looking at data from 250,000 veterans in the Million Veteran Program, researchers found that multiple toxic exposures are increasing the likelihood of experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors by 17%.

Dental health: A review of data from 2 million veterans showed that long-term opioid therapy (more than 90 days) is linked to a 24% higher risk of tooth decay, infections or tooth loss. The medication suppresses the immune system and reduces saliva flow, both of which negatively affect oral health.
