Gerald Blohm lived through a significant part of our nation’s history. Born in 1919, he grew up during the Great Depression on his family’s farm in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon the United States’ entry into World War II, Gerald was drafted into the Army.
Gerald’s daughter, Debra, recalls the steadfast character her father displayed while in the service and throughout his life.
“He put all his heart and soul into whatever he did. He was very talented,” she said. “He was kind of like a jack-of-all-trades, so he was capable of doing whatever the Army wanted him to do.
“The service [to our country] meant an awful lot to him.”
When her father died in 2007, Debra shouldered the responsibility of handling his estate. She knew he had been a DAV donor, as she found evidence of his contributions around his home.
“Seeing that, I felt like Daddy was really into helping other veterans out,” said Debra. “I’m just glad that I could see to it that my father’s estate will be going to help others and carry on blessings to people that need help.”
As for Debra, she still owns a few parcels of her father’s land.
“I’m not for sure what I’ll do with it,” she said. “Someday, if I don’t get it sold, I may be donating that to [DAV] too.”
