DAV is pleased by today’s Defense Department directive ordering an independent commission to investigate the long-standing problem of sexual assault in our military, and by the decision to work in concert with VA to prioritize finding effective solutions. This is an important step in eliminating military sexual trauma and reforming the culture not just in DOD, but ultimately within the veteran community as well. We especially applaud the inclusion of MST survivors in this process—this gives a voice for change to those who may have felt silenced and powerless under a system that did not adequately work to prevent or address this destructive behavior. We look forward to working in partnership with DOD and VA to effect real and lasting change for our service members and veterans.
DAV Statement on DoD Commission to Address Military Sexual Assault
DAV is an organization of veterans helping veterans.
The reasons are as individual as our members. Some join for the fellowship at our more than 1,200 local chapters. Some for the inspiring national events. Others for opportunities to serve their fellow veterans and their families. And many join to continue the fight to support the rights and benefits of all veterans. DAV understands the needs of veterans because we are veterans—1 million strong. We invite you to join our cause.
