As DAV continues to push for comprehensive caregiver benefits for veterans of all eras, DAV Deputy National Legislative Director Adrian Atizado testified before the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee recently regarding the current program, potential improvements and current legislative proposals that would authorize its expansion.

In attendance were DAV past national commanders, Dennis Joyner and Dave Riley, and their wives and caregivers, Donna and Yvonne.

“How can we look these men and women in the face – some of whom are here with us today – and tell them that their service and sacrifices do not merit equitable access to all caregiver benefits?” Atizado asked in his testimony. “How can we say that their spouses, parents, siblings, children and close friends who also sacrifice to be their caregivers do not deserve the same support as those caring for post-9/11 veterans?”

At the hearing, Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Dr. David J. Shulkin spoke about a path towards expansion of the program targeting veterans and family caregivers with the greatest need. Atizado, and other veterans service organizations on the panel, voiced support for that idea with the caveat that it could be a good starting point, but not the final solution.

“We are not adverse to the Secretary’s proposal,” said Atizado. “I want to make sure the committee is sensitive to the urgency of having to do this. Every day we have members who are passing away and family caregivers who are impoverishing themselves and need help now.”
