The September 11th terrorist attacks were tragic and terrifying to say the least. Many veterans and their families who were adversely impacted by the tragic events were visited by National Service Officers (NSOs) who provided these individuals with DAV Disaster Relief grants on the spot, without lengthy delays or red tape.
In addition, throughout the last year, the DAV provided disaster relief grants in the aftermath of natural disasters and other emergencies in various areas around the nation. Mobile Service Offices (MSOs) operated by the Disabled American Veterans spent nearly two weeks deployed to areas in the Gulf Coast region hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina. So far, the DAV has distributed nearly $1.5 million in disaster relief grants to eligible disabled veterans and their families who were victims of Hurricane Katrina. MSOs were deployed in or near Alexandria, La.; Bayou La Batre and Mobile, Ala.; Gulfport, Hattiesburg, and Meridian, Miss.; and Pensacola, Fla. As many residents of the stricken areas were evacuated to other communities, the DAV also assisted qualified veterans at the various evacuation sites, such as Baton Rouge, La., and Houston, Texas, as well as other outreach events coordinated by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The victims of these disasters and the entire nation are proving that the human spirit is stronger than anything that can happen to it.
