The following speeches are designed for informational purposes or for your use as
you plan for events such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and speaking engagements
for general audiences.
When you address civic groups and others in your community, you are an ambassador
from the DAV to the community at large. You bring the message and concerns of disabled
veterans and the DAV's services to the attention of the American people. So you
may want to seek out speaking engagements to use these speeches in your area.
Feel free to adapt the text of a speech to your speaking style. You may also modify
or expand these speeches to suit the needs of your particular audience. But please
remember, as a representative of the DAV, your remarks must not depart from the
DAV's official positions when representing the DAV in public.
You can also achieve valuable publicity for the DAV if you retype these speeches
in the form of a letter to the editor, and send copies to all daily and weekly newspapers
in your area about two weeks before the event of the speech.
We also recommend that you contact radio and TV news directors, as well as newspaper
editors, to tell them of your plans for any of the topics covered by speeches posted
here.
Members needing additional assistance with publicity may request a free DAV Publicity
Guide. The publicity guide is designed to help you tell the DAV story to the American
people. The guide is full of examples, tips and ideas you can use in a variety of
ways. Request your free copy of the DAV Publicity Guide from the DAV National Communications
Department, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301. You may also e-mail your
request. Be sure to include your name and full mailing address in all requests.
